Journey of a Handmade Journal

Mark making, the act of drawing lines and patterns is a surprisingly therapeutic process. This summer, as part of my botanical dying and ink making journey I experimented with a soy mordant and painting marks prior to dying. It was always a bit of a surprise to see what marks would emerge.

I used soy milk and a large flat brush to create a pattern. I call this pattern the “giraffe'“. My favourite parts ended up being where I splashed and dropped the soy milk.

I dyed this piece in coffee and then I did a bit of mixed stitching before I turned it into a journal cover. I embellished the fabric before I made it into a journal cover with wool, jute string,  coffee dyed muslin, burlap, cheese cloth and embroid…

About this Journal.

This handmade, hand-dyed journal features 2 signatures containing blank pages in a combination mixed media, card stock and water colour papers . It would be suitable for mixed media, art journaling, notes or photos. It measures 6 1/4” x 5 1/4” and contains 56 pages (counting both sides of a single page): 8 watercolour, 32 mixed media, 16 (110 lb) card stock.
