My Story

Hi, I’m Kerry Engel—the artist behind Engelbelle. Botanical artist, creative educator, and self-proclaimed mojo maker.

For years I teased that I’d “become an artist when I retired.” Well, here I am—retired, and finally keeping that promise to myself. My creative journey has always been a winding path, but every stop along the way has led me to where I am now: elbow-deep in paper, wax, thread, and flowers.

I work with eco-prints and cyanotypes, often using them as springboards for larger projects. Lately, I’ve been captivated by encaustic wax—there’s something magical about beeswax, damar resin, and a blow torch coming together to form luminous, abstract landscapes. When I’m not experimenting with wax, you’ll likely find me slow stitching, binding handmade journals, or chasing new ways to combine texture, nature, and storytelling.

Before leaning fully into my art practice, I spent most of my career in adult education. Teaching is in my bones, and nothing delights me more than helping others spark their creativity and make a wild, beautiful mess. Whether it’s in a workshop, a on-line event or an intimate studio session, I love guiding others as they find their creative voice.

My Creative Journey

My love affair with art began back in the late ’80s, when I was armed with a camera, scrapbook, and glue stick. By the late ’90s, scrapbooking had taken over my world—I was that mom with a camera always in hand, capturing moments and turning them into layered, colourful stories. Scrapbooking eventually opened the door to mixed media, and from there, I never looked back.
